The Dutch left-back joined the Reds from Vitesse Arnhem in August 2012, the same month in which we signed his compatriot Robin van Persie, whose goals famously helped us to win the Premier League title that season.
Buttner made 13 appearances across 2012/13, scoring on his debut against Wigan Athletic and memorably in Sir Alex’s final match as boss: an emotional and brilliantly chaotic 5-5 draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
