Fred: We grew as the season progressed

Our no.17 was a mainstay of the midfield, as United recovered from a slow start – “we didn’t have a pre-season”, the 28-year-old explains – to finish second in the Premier League and reach the Europa League final.

Despite heartbreaking defeat on penalties in the latter, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man still feels there’s plenty to be positive about.

He also selects his moment of the season below…

Do you feel that there’s been an improvement and that the team has got better as the season’s gone on?
“Definitely, for me the team’s done really well and been growing over the season. We didn’t start that well as we didn’t have a pre-season. We had the Europa League semi-final which prolonged last season. We didn’t have a pre-season and got better and better over the season and reached the final. I think overall the team’s had a great season, we could have achieved more, we wanted to win more trophies, but I think generally it’s been a great season.”
